Recycling Education at the University
REdU
February 27, 2007 Meeting Minutes
Mission Statement: REdU is an effort to establish Recycling Liaisons in departments across campus. Liaisons will be our front line champions and will disseminate information presented along to others in their department. They will also be tagged within their department as a person to ask regarding recycling questions. They can also bring questions and concerns back from their areas to WMS staff so that we may address them.
- Introductions
- Updates
- Grounds and Waste Management and Plant Building Services have merged. The new name will likely be Plant Building and Grounds Services (PBGS).
- WMS had taken over the used campus envelope program. We will pick up excess envelopes from building docks. Envelopes may be picked up from our office for free M-F, 8-4.
- WMS will be conducting a waste sort the week of 3/19 to determine recyclables thrown in the trash, determine how we can educate better, and provide insight for future projects. We will be needing volunteers. Email Recycle (get address) (38.103.63.61) if interested.
- Presentation: RecycleMania
A presentation was given on RecycleMania, a 10 week (1/28-4/7) nationwide intercollegiate waste reduction and recycling competition. There was an overview of the competition and what UM is competing in. We are also currently conducting a Recycling Champions Competition for staff running in conjunction with RecycleMania. This compares recycling rate among participating buildings.
The three main focuses for RecycleMania this year are eliminated the printing of agendas, use reusable cups and mugs, and reuse 1-sided paper.
- Discussion
There was discussion on how a competing building’s recycling rate is calculated if it shares a dumpster. To account for this, we count internal recycling and trash bins and use this ratio to calculate what percentages of recycling and trash are attributed to each building.
Future meeting topics discussed were information on the GWM and PBS merger, how to acquire more recycling bins if you do not work in facilities for your building, and information on the potential Elbel Field green roof.
- Next Meeting
The next meeting will be May 8th, 2007, location TBD.
