Mission Statement: REdU is an effort to establish Recycling Liaisons in departments across campus. Liaisons will be our front line champions and will disseminate information presented along to others in their department. They will also be tagged within their department as a person to ask regarding recycling questions. They can also bring questions and concerns back from their areas to WMS staff so that we may address them.

1. Introductions

2. Follow Up to July Items

E-media recycling bins: Lynne showed the group pictures of potential recycling bins that could be used to collect e-media from students, faculty and staff. Paul suggested placing larger bins in residence halls. Potential sites within residence halls suggested by the group included in waste closets, near the front desk or in the computing site. Neile stated that there is a large interest in this program at the School of Music and preferred the smaller cardboard bin. Lynne will follow up on this by getting pricing information.

Double-sided printing: Lynne stated that she hadn't heard anything from SITES regarding the placement of instructions on double-sided printing in their computer sites. The group provided contacts that they knew of to Lynne. Lynne will follow up with these contacts regarding double-siding instructions in the SITES computing labs.

Computer packaging concerns: Eileen contacted Dell regarding their packaging. They ship primarily using polystyrene, arcel and polyethylene. Eileen asked the group what they would like to see computers packaged in. Tracy stated cardboard or polystyrene as best while Troy stated that it would also work if the computer companies simply took back the packaging once the computers have been unpacked here on campus. Eileen will continue to work with WMS and campus computer suppliers on reducing packaging waste coming onto campus.

Recycling exhibit at the UGLi: WMS has been given permission to set up a display and advertise on bulletin boards in the lobby of the Undergraduate Library. Both the display and the bulletin boards should be up soon.

One-sided paper notebooks: No progress was made here. Tracy will work with Printing Services on determining if this is a viable project.

3. Blue Green Meeting Policies

Lynne displayed for the group the environmentally-friendly meeting policies that REdU will be run under. These include electronically available minutes and agendas, the encouragement of members to print as little as possible and the overall goal of reducing the environmental impact of the meetings as much as possible.

4. Presentation: Reducing Junk Mail at Work and Home

A PowerPoint presentation was given on reducing junk mail at work and home. Paul inquired about junk mail at the Residence Halls, most of it generated once the students leave for the summer or for good. He also stated that he would like to donate magazines that are sent to students no longer living in the Law Quad, but is not sure if it is allowed. Lynne will look into ways of stopping the junk mail generated in the Residence Halls once the students leave.

5. Online Resources

Lynne provided the group with a number of online resources for stopping junk mail.

6. Questions/Comments

Julie inquired about standardizing the stickers on recycling bins around campus. WMS will begin to work on replacing out dated stickers on recycling bins with the currently used stickers.

7. Next Meeting

The next meeting will be on September 20 at 2:00 pm. The location is yet to be determined.
