Programs and Training Activities

Employee development has always been a major priority at Building Services. In 1993, the department allocated additional resources to this area. More focus was placed on improving the work and personal life of the employee. In addition, all new employees are required to attend the department's forty hour New Employee Orientation and Technical Training.

Professional and Personal Development Training

Technical Training Programs and New Employee Orientation

All new employees in our department attend a thorough new employee orientation (NEO) program. Our technical training and orientation program combines video presentation and classroom activities with a great deal of interactive discussion. The format maximizes employee interest and participation and assures excellent retention of information.

The following topics are addressed:
  • University and departmental policies and procedures
  • Standards of conduct in the department
  • All OSEH training required by federal law: Blood Borne Pathogens, Radiation Control, Hazard Communication, Asbestos Awareness, Electrical Safety, and Hazardous Waste Handling Procedures.
  • Effective customer service practices
  • Cleaning procedures
  • Proper usage of chemicals
  • Custodial equipment usage and maintenance

All employees go through annual re-training on OSEH required safety topics and the customer service techniques section of NEO.

Employee Working Out of Classification (EWOC) Program

The EWOC program is a career development program designed to provide training to qualified custodial employees who desire upward mobility into maintenance mechanic and grounds positions. Employees in this program go through a rigorous training schedule that combines on the job training with classroom work.

Each EWOC participant goes through 40 hours on the job training per week from May through September for up to three years. In the Maintenance EWOC Program, each participant also must receive classroom instruction in math, technical algebra, basic wiring, plumbing, etc. The classroom work is coordinated through Washtenaw Community College. The objective of this program is to provide career mobility to custodial employees. Although participants may leave the program without having obtained a maintenance or grounds position, they will have received three years of valuable training that may qualify them for career advancement.

Computer Workshops

In addition, employees without a high school diploma are given the opportunity to prepare for the GED Test. Many employees have participated in our Adult Education Programs.
