Fun Facts & Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Grounds get the annuals and perennials that are planted around campus?

Plants are purchased from various wholesale vendors.

Why are the bulbs pulled up in the Spring?

Only the bulbs in the annual beds are pulled up to make room for the annual flowers. This is done so that the campus can have continuous color and blooms throughout the growing season. The bulbs that are pulled up are relocated. Bulbs in perennial beds are not pulled up; they remain in the ground and re-bloom in subsequent seasons.

Are the Grounds department and the Botanical Gardens connected?

No, the two entities operate independently, but will occasionally work together on special projects such as the annual Ann Arbor Flower Show. Grounds are a part of Plant Operations, and the Botanical Gardens are owned and managed by the College of LSA.

Where is the largest tree on campus?

The largest tree on campus is the Quercus Bebbiana growing by the East Quad residence hall at 74" diameter. The largest American Elm Tree on campus is 49" in diameter.

Whom do I call for moving and trucking?

The phone number is 4-2487.
