The Health & Wellness office is located in the Hoover Building 'B' room number 1306A (right next to the Cabinet Shop). This location allows greater contact with F&O units in general and Plant Operations in particular.

Healthy Greetings!

With flu season rapidly approaching in many parts of the world, prevention is your best defense against the fever chills and cough that the virus can bring on. Try the following:
  • Wash your hands, especially when you're out in public places, with hot water and soap. When you travel (even from one meeting to another), it’s a good idea to carry alcohol towelettes or purell (hand sanitizer) with you.

  • Get a flu shot. This is especially important for those over 65 years old, as well as anyone with a weakened immune or respiratory system, nursing home residents, and health care workers who have regular contact with patients. Pregnant women whose last two trimesters fall during flu season (generally November to April) might consider getting the shot as well.

  • Get daily vitamins and antioxidants. Berries, tea and dark chocolate all provide natural antioxidants and consider taking a multiple vitamin with minerals.

  • Keep up on fluids. Staying hydrated keeps nasal passages moist, providing better natural defenses against viruses.

  • Exercise.  You may not think of physical activity as medicine, but in fact, when taken daily, it is powerful medicine.  Exercise can help boost your immune system.

  • Get plenty of sleep.  The average adult needs at least 7 – 8 hours of sleep.

  • Reduce your stress levels.  Some stress is good, but know when to relax. Too much stress impairs the immune system.

Why weight management is important to your overall health!

In general, losing weight slowly (about 1 pound a week) is what doctors recommend.  At times, this rate of weight loss can seem frustrating.  But for a moment, put aside thoughts of losing weight quickly. Instead, think about how achieving a healthy weight can help prevent premature aging and many diseases.

Weighing too much increases your risk of developing many health-related problems.  The more excess fat you carry, the greater your risk of developing certain health conditions.  If you reach and maintain a healthy weight, you can reduce your risk of:
  • Sleep apnea
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease and stroke
  • High blood fats such as cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Gallstones
  • Fatty liver disease

You can lower your health risks by losing as little as 5 to 10 pounds.  Maintaining a healthy weight can boost your energy level and improve your self-esteem and give you a greater sense of independence.

Why are stretching exercises so important? Who should stretch?

Stretching, because it relaxes your mind and tunes up your body, should be a part of your daily life. Take a look at just a few of the benefits of stretching:
  • Reduce muscle tension
  • Increase range of motion
  • Help coordination
  • Help prevent injuries such as muscles strains
  • Develop body awareness
  • Makes strenuous activities like cycling, running, softball, swimming, skiing, and tennis easier because it prepares you for activity.
Everyone can learn to stretch, regardless of age or flexibility. You do not need to be in top physical condition or have specific athletic skills. Whether you sit at a desk all day, paint, weld, do housework, drive a truck, or exercise regularly, the same techniques of stretching apply. Take time out today to stretch, even if it is for 1 minute! You will feel the difference!

To your good health!
Yours in fitness,
Greg
